Some of the best FREE security programs!!! We've obtained most of these at: download.com and/or the top trusted techsites (listed here) We've researched these, downloaded, and run various security scans on all of these programs. We are running ALL of these programs on HP WinME P3 and DELL WinXP Celeron. Download and try them all! You still need to scan ALL of your downloads with various anti-virus & anti-trojan scanners to make sure these are the same programs that we're using. No website is safe, not even the FBI.

Most programs should be treated like our friends
Sometimes they all pull something different.
It's the crappy ones you need to get rid of... LOL

Protect your computer's system...
  1. Close all running programs before installing any program.
  2. Install every program after a fresh bootup; cold-boot or re-boot.
  3. For best results, reboot after installing, especially before installing another program.
:: SCAN ALL DOWNLOADS ::
Hackers have broken into secure websites, replaced file downloads, and even copied websites (site/program theft), and most visitors have no idea until their PC acts up.

Update security programs - BEFORE scanning programs - EVERYTIME you use them!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following is in no particular order, just use them if and when needed.
(Just don't run these programs all at the same time)
Total Uninstall (FREE) by Gabi Martau @ http://www.geocities.com/ggmartau/index.html - Total Uninstall monitors any changes that are made to your system during installation of a new software product, and allows you to perform a complete uninstall without having to rely on a uninstall program (which may leave files or changes behind).
Total Uninstall Directions...
(1) start Total Uninstall
(2) Total Uninstall will then create a snapshot of your system before it installs the new software.
(3) install a new program from the Total Uninstall interface and select the system areas to be monitored. (We checked/selected all the boxes.)
(4) Total Uninstall then creates an additional snapshot of your system after the install completes. It compares the two snapshots and displays all changes in a graphical tree view, marking all values and/or files that have been added or changed as well as some before/after details. Total Uninstall saves these changes and if you decide to uninstall the application, it will reverse all changes to the previous state.
*Multi-lingual user interface: English, German, Romanian, French, Spanish, Czech, Italian, Dutch, Galician, Polish, Catalan. http://computercops.biz/article-4888-nested-0-0.html
(Total Uninstall is reported to be 98% more effective than your System Restore or Go-Back. Not all programs finish installing during the initial install, so you might want to run a program once during #3, above. ~ Bec)
Anti-Trojan: a2 Free was updated MAR-9-2005 (FREE) by www.emsisoft.com/en
a-squared (a²) is a complementary product to antivirus software and desktop firewalls on MS Windows computers. Antivirus software specializes in detecting classic viruses. Many available products have weaknesses in detecting other malicious software (Malware) like Trojans, Dialers, Worms and Spyware (Adware). a² fills the gap that malware writers exploit.
Version 1.6 for Win98/ME/NT4/2000/2000Server/XP/2003Server (1.24 MB)
*a² Free Updater must be run manually. *You're allowed to send a² Free to others - BUT -the usual preference is to send someone a link to the download page.
UPDATE March 18, 2005 : a2 Free DOES NOT have a Background Guard, like the paid version a² Personal
(I'll continue to look for ANOTHER free Anti-Trojan Program that has a Background Guard.)
WE SHOULD UPDATE EACH & EVERY PROGRAM JUST BEFORE USING IT TO SCAN !
Anti-Virus: AVG (FREE) by Grisoft -and- http://free.grisoft.com/doc/3 has free ROXIO Update! Manual/AutoUpdate everyday. *I prefer autoupdate with notification because it asks me if I want to update. That's great when I'm already running another program. We've been using AVG Anti-Virus for 2 years, and it's been working great on our Win98SE/ME/XP computers. Version 7.308 for Win 98/ME/2000 or newer. For Win 95 or NT with I.E. 5.01 (or newer)
UPDATE: Your unique code is NOW included within the AVG installation program.
Anti-Trojan: www.TrojanScan.com (FREE ONLINE SCANNER) Most PC's don't have many problems using online scanners at trusted sites, and this site is listed as trusted.
(From 2004: This online-scan crashes my WinXP. Could this be from removing MS JAVA? I'll reinstall my OS and go back for another scan there. Stay tuned, I'll keep you posted.
UPDATE Feb. 23, 2005: Reinstalling my WinXP Operating System didn't help to successfully scan at trojanscan.com At least my computer doesn't lock-up anymore - the scan just doesn't work for my WinXP computer... Could this be a Celeron issue? I will do more research about this! Stay tuned...
*BUT, READ THIS...
WinXP FIX for IE.6
My Internet Explorer was crashing for months!
The crashes kept becoming more frequent. I'm used to having 20 plus windows open at the same time. Before I knew it I couldn't have 5 or 6 windows open, and then even TWO windows would give me popup Explorer Errors. I've tried reinstalling from CD and from Microsoft's IE website. Nothing I did even seemed to help. I ran ALL of the ANTI-ware programs, and even visited www.PcPitStop.com for a quick fix, but that didn't help either. If this sounds similar to your IE experience, CHECK OUT THESE FIXES.
Anti-Startup: (FREE) StartUp Monitor 60kb INSTANT REPORTING PROGRAM (I like this one best) This a great "watchdog" program, because it doesn't allow any programs to "auto start" without you knowing about it. Does the same thing that WinPatrol and WinSonar do, but is much smaller. ~ Clif
Quote from the website: StartupMonitor is a small utility that runs transparently (it doesn't even use a tray icon) and notifies you when any program registers itself to run at system startup. It prevents those utterly useless tray applications from registering themselves behind your back, and it acts as a security tool against trojans like BackOrifice or Netbus.
Anti-Startup: StartupList (FREE) by Merijn http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html
A simple tool that lists all and every auto starting program on your system. You might be surprised what it finds, this is way better than MSConfig. Commonly used to troubleshoot malfunctioning systems, trojan/viral infections, new spyware/malware breed and the likes.
Currently at version: 1.52.1 (
Mirror @ LurkHere)
Anti-StartUp: WinPatrol (FREE) will alert you if Spyware, Adware, or any program has changed or infiltrated on your computer without your knowledge. Scotty the dog is on duty by your PC clock, checking your system every few minutes, then alerts you of any changes. (Specified time is set by each user. Minimum setting: 1 min.) Removal, Ignore or Keep, are the alert options. My Scotty is set at default, to sniff every 3 minutes :)
anti-hijack: CWShredder: zipped (FREE) by Merijn : http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html : A small utility for removing CoolWebSearch varients (aka. CoolWwwSearch, YouFindAll, White-Pages.ws and a dozen other names). Spybot S&D and Ad-aware tend to forget essential parts of the hijack, so until they update, you can use this to completely remove the hijack. This program is updated to remove the new variants once they come out.  *Read Merijn's article with documentation on Coolwebsearch here.
anti-dialers/anti-scumware/anti-spyware: SpywareBlaster (FREE) by JavaCool
  • Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
  • Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
  • Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
    Prevent installation in
    some of the fastest-growing threats on the Internet today. By simply browsing to a web page, you could find your computer to be the brand-new host of one of these unwanted fiends! http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
  • NOTE: If you are still having problems with popups appearing on your computer when popups shouldn't be, like you're only reading email. Then use this SpywareBlaster program. I'm not referring to bulk/spam email. But when you're reading email from family and friends (which don't usually include popups in email) and you're seeing popups every few minutes or so, then that's more than likely some internal popup program running.
    Use SpywareBlaster and/or HijackThis (below) to help fix your popup problems.
    If you don't think "Spyware" is a problem for computer users, take a look at what Google has on "Spyware" http://www.google.com/search?q=Spyware
    System Utilities:
    HijackThis: zipped (FREE) by Merijn @ http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html Scan your Registry and HD for spys. A general homepage hijackers detector and remover. Shows a more extensive list of startup items than MSCONFIG since it also includes Registry links. Initially based on the article Hijacked!, but expanded with almost a dozen other checks against hijacker tricks. It is continually updated to detect and remove new hijacks. It does not target specific programs/URLs, just the methods used by hijackers to force you onto their sites. As a result, false positives are imminent and unless you are sure what you're doing, you should always consult with knowledgable folks (e.g. the forums) before deleting anything. OS: Windows (all) File Size: 149K
    A rudimentary HijackThis log tutorial by Merijn is available
    The official HijackThis QuickStart for posting on the SpywareInfo forums is available
    Free File Home page + Free File (links)
Whoever said there is no such thing as a free lunch may have been right. But for millions of eligible taxpayers this year, there is Free File. Free File is online tax preparation and electronic filing through a partnership agreement between the IRS and the Free File Alliance, LLC. In other words, you can e-file... free.
    It’s easy and it’s free.”
    News Release
    April 5, 2004 - Columbus, Ohio - OHIO PITCHES ‘ON-LINE’ FILING FOR FASTEST REFUNDS
    Ohio I-File Delivering Quick Refunds and Tax Savings
    Columbus -- (April 5, 2004) Ohio Tax Commissioner Bill Wilkins today urged all those who still haven’t filed their Ohio income tax returns to file electronically to get tax refunds back fast—and save all Ohio taxpayers millions of dollars.
    “Electronic filing is the best way to go for the taxpayer, and it is the best way to go for those who worry about how tax dollars are spent,” Wilkins said. “Most people know about TeleFile and e-file, but I want to remind everyone that they can go on-line to the Department of Taxation web site and file using Ohio I-File. It’s only the second year Ohio I-File has been available, so a lot of people may not know about it. It’s easy and it’s free.”
    Generally, he said, benefits to the taxpayer of electronic filing include:
    --Direct deposit of a tax refund into a taxpayer’s bank account within five to seven days of filing a return. (Refunds from a paper return can take six to eight weeks.)
    --With Ohio I-File, most taxpayers take only ten minutes to file a return.
    --A return can be filed anytime with Ohio I-File, and the taxpayer receives instant confirmation of the filing.
    --Ohio I-File is free! Most electronic filing systems charge a fee to file state taxes; with Ohio I-File there is no charge.
    --Tax due payments can be made on-line by credit card or electronic check which allows taxpayers to choose a payment date of any day up to and including April 15th.
    --Ohio I-File minimizes errors.
    Wilkins said Ohio I-File and other electronic filing options deliver benefits to more than just the individual taxpayer.
    “Everybody complains about taxes. Electronic filing is one way they can do something about it. People who file their tax returns electronically save Ohio millions of tax dollars,” Wilkins said. “That’s because it costs us about $3 to process a paper return compared to an average $1.15 to process one electronically.”
    Wilkins added, “When you process more than five million tax returns every year the way we do, the savings with electronic filing are huge.”
    Last year, about 40 percent – more than 2.2 million – of all returns coming into ODT were electronic. Only California had more paperless returns. Ohio receives a total of about 5.6 million returns.
